5 years of Reward

This year we’re celebrating our 5th year in business.

Not bad going aye.

A lot has happened in 5 years, Donald Trump became the president of the United States of America and Brexit happened (or didn’t).

Most businesses don’t survive the first 5 years so we’re pretty chuffed we’ve made it and have helped others to do the same and buck the trend of small businesses failing.

“60% of small businesses fail within their first five years”.

What have we learnt in the past 5 years

We’ve learnt a lot over the past 5 years about marketing, design and business. All of which have helped us to improve not only our own business but our customers too.

The 3 most valuable lessons we’ve learnt:

  • You have to evolve and innovate to survive. Standing still doesn’t cut it, you have to constantly strive to be better in everything you do. Your processes, customer experience and marketing need to constantly evolve to ensure you’re delivering the best product or service you can.
  • Know your customers. Most startups focus a lot on product and getting it perfect. In reality without knowing your customers, it’s impossible to build a business that lasts. Similarly, it’s easy to lose focus of who your customer is after a year or two in business. Constantly make sure you’re meeting and exceeding the needs of your customers at regular intervals and don’t lose sight of who your customers are.
  • Invest to grow. We preach to our customers about investing in marketing all the time, but something we forgot to do over the years was market ourselves. To the point we became a bit of a best kept secret. Over time we’ve changed that and invest more into marketing than we’ve ever done to make sure we keep growing and reach new customers.

Who we work with has changed

We’ve gone through some changes over the years, when we launched in 2014 we were called Reward. In 2018, we rebranded to become Reward.

Why? For a few reasons.

Media didn’t really sum up what we did. It suggested that we were a media buyer or we sold advertising. And secondly in the wake of Donald Trump, left media became a popular google search term for right wing publications to attack people and brands that supported left wing politicians and parties.

As you can imagine, we didn’t want to get into a political debate. Brexit is enough for us all to cope with.

But more importantly we changed our focus on only working with sustainable and ethical brands.

Over the years like most businesses we wanted to work with everybody, but in a competitive marketing agency sector it has become increasingly difficult to differentiate. So by standing for something and saying we work with this specific group of people we have been able to grow and stand out.

We now work with:

  • Manufacturers with a focus on sustainable design and manufacturing processes
  • Ecommerce brands and online retailers with an ethical stance
  • B2B organisations focused on looking after their people
  • Charities helping communities, people and the planet

We love working with brands making a difference, it adds a whole new level to the satisfaction you get when a project is a success.

What hasn’t changed

What hasn’t changed over the past 5 years is our dedication and love of branding and marketing.

Although marketing has never been more complex in terms of the number of ways to reach people with organic search, social media and inbound/outbound – we’re moving towards a better way of marketing.

The industry is moving towards more personal marketing. Marketing that is based on permission, not interrupting people as they go about their daily lives.

Our dedication to helping charity and businesses achieve more is still at the forefront of everything we do.

Here’s to the next 5 years

It’s hard to say what the next 5 years will bring.

Will Donald Trump get a second term? Will Brexit ever happen?

What we can be sure of though is we’re excited to see what happens in the world of startups, business and marketing – it’s been an exciting 5 years and we can’t wait for the next 5.

See you in 2024.
